Indra Kunindra
Commissioned by the University of Northern Iowa, Indra Kunindra is an approachable multi-sectional mixed-meter piece scored for eight brass and the option for additional percussion. The opening conducted statement features a haunting melody featuring a solo trumpet accompanied by the trombone section. This conducted section gives way to a groove based, exotic section that contrasts with a relaxed, dance-like gesture in 3/4. A beautiful developing solo section for guitar or piano emerges and transitions to darker textures for an angry solo for the first alto saxophone. The composition comes to a peak as a driving groove serves as the canvas for a return of the haunting melody that features the full brass section in a conducted chorale. The composition closes with a resolute and confident statement referencing the dance-like 3/4 material.
