This is my arrangement of “Dolphin Dance” played by the Ryan Middagh Jazz Orchestra. Out of all the Big Band arrangements I’ve done, this has to be one of the most adventurous. In parts of the arrangement I utilized 12-tone technique, bitonality, crab-cannon and a few other compositional techniques (can someone say NERD ALERT 🤓).

It was once described by Dana Landry, the director of jazz studies at the University of Northern Colorado as if “A dolphin was being attached by a shark. In this case, the dolphin is the tenor soloist, and the shark is the rest of the band.” The good news, is the Dolphin gets away at the end (spoiler alert). The tenor soloist on this recording is my Blair School of Music at Vanderbilt colleague Jeff Coffin, and the chart also features Lindsey Miller on guitar. Hope you enjoy it!
